Dual-voltage, gasless and classic 120V MIG welders compared, from $119.99.
Our picks

The most welder for the money here.

The closest rival to the MIG200: dual voltage, five processes and a digital display.

The cheapest real welder worth buying.
Two knobs and a trigger.
A MIG welder is the easiest way to start welding at home. We compared six popular machines from Arccaptain, YesWelder, Forney, Hobart and Lincoln Electric on price, output, processes, duty cycle and how easy they are to set up.
Short version: inverter multi-process welders now give you more power and more processes for less money than the old transformer machines.
Arccaptain MIG200 Multi-Process MIG Welder

The most welder for the money here. It runs on a 110V household outlet and steps up to 200 amps on 220V, so it grows with you from sheet metal to thicker plate.

Arccaptain MIG135 3-in-1 110V Gasless Welder

The cheapest real welder worth buying. It weighs under 10 pounds, plugs into a standard outlet and needs no gas bottle, so you can fix a gate or trailer where the job is.
Synergic MIG mode sets voltage and wire speed for you. It is flux core only for MIG, so welds are messier than gas MIG on thin sheet metal.
Why we like it

- 9.48 lbs
- No gas bottle needed
- Stick and lift TIG too
Watch out for
- No gas MIG
- 110V only, 135A max

Forney Easy Weld 261 140 FC-i Flux-Core Welder
Two knobs and a trigger. Forney's 140 FC-i does one thing, flux-core wire welding on a household outlet, and it's built to be hard to get wrong.
It welds mild steel up to 1/4 inch. There's no gas option and no stick or TIG, so you'll outgrow it faster than the multi-process machines.
Why we like it
- Very simple controls
- 19 lbs
- Big US brand
Watch out for
- Flux core only
- 30-day defect warranty, 1 year on internal electrics
- Input

Hobart Handler 140 MIG Welder (500559)
A shop classic. The Handler 140 ships with a dual-gauge regulator and gas hose, so you can run clean gas MIG welds on thin auto sheet metal straight away.
It's a transformer machine: heavier, 115V only and MIG only. You pay more for the Hobart name than for features.
Why we like it
- Gas MIG kit in the box
- Five-position voltage control
- Well-known US brand
Watch out for
- 115V only
- No stick or TIG
- Heavier than inverter welders
- Input
- 115V

Lincoln Electric Easy MIG 140 (K2697-1)
Lincoln's entry MIG welder covers the same ground as the Hobart: 120V, 140 amps, gas or flux-core wire, simple tapped voltage controls.
It's 50 pounds and does MIG only. Buy it if you want the Lincoln name and dealer network; otherwise the inverter machines above do more for less.

How to choose
Gas or gasless. Flux-core (gasless) works outdoors and needs no bottle. Gas MIG gives cleaner welds on thin metal but needs a cylinder and regulator.
110V or 220V. A 110V machine plugs in anywhere. Dual-voltage welders reach 200A on a 220V dryer-style outlet for thicker steel.
Duty cycle. It's how many minutes out of 10 a welder can run at a given amperage. 20% at 90A means 2 minutes on, 8 off.
Room to grow. Stick and lift TIG modes let one machine handle rusty farm steel and neat stainless work later.
Questions people ask
What's the best type of welder for a beginner?
MIG. You pull a trigger and the machine feeds wire for you, so it's the fastest to learn. Synergic MIG welders like the Arccaptain MIG200 and MIG135 even set wire speed and voltage for you.
MIG or TIG for a beginner?
Start with MIG. TIG gives neater welds on thin metal but takes two hands, often a foot pedal, and a lot more practice. Multi-process machines like the Arccaptain MIG200 and YesWelder MIG-205DS PRO can add lift TIG later.
Do I need gas for a MIG welder?
No. Flux-core (gasless) wire makes its own shielding, which is why it works outdoors. Gas gives cleaner welds on thin sheet metal but needs a bottle and regulator. The Hobart Handler 140 ships with a regulator and hose.
Can a MIG welder do aluminum?
Yes, with a spool gun and argon gas. The Arccaptain MIG200 and YesWelder MIG-205DS PRO both support a spool gun, sold separately.
Can I plug a welder into a normal outlet?
All six welders in this guide run on 110 to 120V household power. Dual-voltage models also run on 220V for thicker steel. Check the manual for the circuit size your welder needs.
The bottom line
For most home and garage welders, the Arccaptain MIG200 at $349.99 is the best buy: 110V/220V, up to 200 amps, gas or gasless MIG plus stick and lift TIG, and $150 off list. On a tight budget, the Arccaptain MIG135 at $119.99 handles gasless repairs. Prefer Amazon? The YesWelder MIG-205DS PRO is the closest match.
